LO5: Production

Original Images

I had the idea that I would use frames taken directly from the short film in order to help achieve the found footage effect that I wanted in my final poster.

To  create my first poster I took one of the pictures of Tom (who plays Dwayne in the film) and used the Posterise effect to try and replicate the look of vintage posters.

I used rulers to create a border for my poster.

I had this idea of removing the background and bits of the subject to connote the idea of not being sure of yourself. I did this using the magic wand tool.

Afterwards, I duplicated the layer and changed the layer to black to make the image a little clearer and to add some depth. However, I still though the poster looked bit bland.

I then had the idea of changing the background to black, which helps the text look much clearer. Then I changed Tom's image to red, to connote danger. In my research, I found that red was a common colour used in posters for horrors and thrillers.

A central theme of our short film is the idea of Xenophobia as well as general fear. The film specifically shows characters becoming seemingly delusional due to fear. I wanted to capture that by adding a sort of 3D effect.

Here I begin manipulating the colours by changing the hue and contrast of the top layer. Then I added a layer mask which allows me to select which areas of the layer will be visible. I did this in order to better replicate the repeating effect on an old VHS tape.

In this video I begin building layers to make the found-footage effect look more authentic. Using a layer mask and the noise effect creates a sort of dotted effect to replicate the noise you would see back on a camcorder.

I copied and pasted the layer twice and changed which colour channels were visible.
